Having driven past a few times on previous weekends, seeing signs spouting promises of artisan bread, fresh fruit & vegies, free range eggs and organic produce, I finally woke up early enough to check out The Farmers Market on Manning in Bentley (just across the road from Curtin University) this morning with my mama.
My first time at a farmers market, what glee!
The markets are teeming with activity and everyone there seems relaxed and happy, my kinda place. There are cute little stalls throughout & pups galore (excellent).
Cardboard boxes are the go with no plastic bags to be seen. We try some organic lemon & garlic kalamata olives from a farm in York and end up buying some… so tasty! And at a similar price you’d pay in the supermarket.
Stalls noted include… flower / plants, organic tea, honey, curry puffs (!?!!), organic+vegetarian cheese (this place was going off because they were offering free cheese samples), chutney & sauces, raw juice, fudge, cakes, as well as the fruit, vegies, fresh meat, free range eggs etc.
The prices seemed exceptionally reasonable, I bought a bunch of organic kale for $2.50 & an organic kiwi fruit for $0.80. They will both make an excellent smoothie for me later!
Highlight of the morning would be seeing a tiny Italian boy with a huge loaf of artisan olive & sun-dried tomato bread that was about 1/3 the size of him, nibbling all over it, so cute!
The setting is fantastic, on the green grass under the shady pine trees next to the Aboriginal music college on Manning Road.
I’ll definitely be going back, I want to eat more local & organic foods and this is a wonderful way to support our local industries and farmers.
If you live South of the River, give it a go! I think you’ll enjoy it just as much as I did 🙂

Yes I’ve driven past this twice on a Saturday but haven’t had a chance to stop by! I hope to do so very soon, maybe we can have organic adventures together!
I would love some dual-organic adventures! Yummy raw juice! They also have crepes, mmmm 🙂 This Saturday?!
Wow, totally didn’t know this existed! Will definitely make a trip soon!
We went again Today and I bought a raw pineapple juice and we got organic salad ingredients and olive turkish bread and had a delicious feast afterwards, it was so good!
I recommend getting there early so you get the best pick, plus the best atmosphere and it’s a bit cooler too 🙂
Wha? There’s a farmers market less then 5 mins drive from my front door? See you there on Saturday!
PS: For those further afield, there’s also a Farmer’s Market in Subiaco. 8-12 on Saturdays. I was down there 3 or so weeks ago and it really is quite lovely and quaint. Since coming back from the UK, I think that pottering around these things is going to become my new unofficial hobby 🙂
Hi Bob,
Thank you for your comment (and e-mail, I’ll be getting back to that ASAP)! Yes the Manning Market is really growing in popularity, it’s a bustling hive of activity!
I love all the organic produce, and there is always something new to taste & smell.
Let me know how you liked it when you end up going 🙂
x
Hi Annette
Actually, I was so stunned to hear about this place (literally within walking distance – crazy!) that I’m making the ‘pilgrimage’ this Saturday.
Also, I found a url to the subiaco farmers-market I mentioned above. Might be worth a look see

No – I don’t work for em 🙂 I just dig their vibe
Postscript:
I went to The Farmers Market on Manning today. Lovely little place -even managed to snag two (count ’em – 2!) free turnips (yeah, it’s a long story).
Irrespective, it’s worth a squiz for any Perthities
Did you buy anything else? I really want to purchase one of the blueberry bush/trees that I’ve seen there before.
Got some organic produce & drank some organic coffee. Also got some lovely WaterMellon, Apple and Strawberry juice. Hopefully, the vendor will take my suggestion for Hot spiced Apple and Cinnamon (as it’s now winter) to heart; it makes for a lovely ye-olde drink
Didn’t see any blueberry trees etc; I was too busy funning around with the turnip guys 🙂
Them: “Free turnips!”
Me: “What’s second prize? Two turnips?”
Them: “Don’t forget to grab your turnip!”
Me: “Hmmm…no, you keep it. I don’t have anyone I want to poison this week”
etc
That juice sounds great. Do you remember how much you paid for it? Very interested in trying that one out!
Haha, yes but regardless you still did take some turnips, so maybe you do have someone you would like to poison?!
I have to get down there more often, I tend to sleep in on a Sat morning and by the time I go all the best stuff is gone!
Well…I had so much fun with em that I decided to take the turnips in good humor.
The juice was $12 for 2L, which is a little costly, but they had sold out of smaller bottles. OTOH, the bottled coffee was $2 for 400ml, which is quite economical.
