Food Review: Manna Wholefoods & Cafe, South Fremantle.

by | Apr 25, 2010 | Dining, Food, Products, Reviews, South of River | 10 comments

Manna Wholefoods & Cafe is an absolute gem for those of us who are into organic, fair-trade, raw, vegetarian / vegan, healthy or just plain tasty food & groceries.

I was surprised to be informed of the existence of Manna by Conor from Perth food blog Hold The Beef, as it’s the kind of place you’d expect to find in Melbourne, 150% the type of place I’ve been wishing and hoping for and apparently it’s been right under my nose for quite some time!

Tucked down South Terrace, you’d be forgiven for missing it, however the unassuming shop front and few scattered chairs and tables give way to a wonderland of treats once you step through the door.

I spent ages trying to decide what to eat, but finally settled on a scrumptious looking (& tasting) large slice of vegetable pizza ($6) & this lovely drink below…

DELICIOUS – CoCo Coconut Juice w/Blood Orange ($4.34)

Other offerings were raw smoothies, raw salads, spelt vegetarian lasagne, tasty looking sandwiches, organic beef pies & sausage rolls, healthy desserts and a wide range of coffees & juices.

I didn’t have much chance to look around the rest of the shop as my friend wanted to leave, but I did see quite a range of fresh and frozen produce, all labeled organic / conventional which is handy and I will most certainly be back VERY soon to check out their wares and no doubt try some more food & drink!

If you live anywhere in the vicinity of Freo / South of the River I highly, highly recommend checking it out and supporting little businesses who are looking out for your health & wellbeing.

Great review! I agree wholeheartedly. I didn’t know they had those coconut juice drinks there! I will definitely try one next time I go 🙂 You could spend all day browsing the shelves hey…there is just so much to see! I tried a Lara Bar last time as they are talked about a lot on American raw food blogs, and it was yummy!

    Thanks for your comment Heather!

When I was in the USA last year they had too many flavours of Larabars to choose from so I got confused and didn’t know which ones to have… I tried the apple pie one though and that was pretty delish 🙂

I didn’t see them at Manna but will check ’em out when I go back! x

Oh wow so you would have had so much variety over there! Awesome! Apple pie sounds delish! Must look out for that one 🙂

Hehe yeah there is the most amazing supermarket chain in America called ‘Wholefoods Market’. Amazing. Seriously, I could live in there!

I also went to two of the best vegetarian restaurants in America while in San Francisco, I’m incredibly lucky (in terms of food experiences, my other experiences over there were less so.)

Anywhoooo yes try the Apple Pie – yummo.

Awwww how lucky are you!! I’d love to go to San Francisco! I fee Perth is lacking on the gourmet vego restaurant side of things so I would love to go somewhere like that! 🙂 And the closest I had got to the “Wholefoods Market” (from what I am assuming) is Farmer Jacks in Claremont because they stock some specialty products…but how great would it be to have a chain supermarket like that in Aus!? Not fair.

P.s. Sorry to hear you had bad experiences over there, thats no good. x

Have you been to Sandcastle Organic in Fremantle? That is probably my favourite gourmet vegetarian restaurant in Perth – I haven’t been for almost a year, it’s really a place you go to treat yourself as it’s pricey, but well worth it 🙂

The IGA near my house stocks a wide range of vegan and gourmet products now, it’s pretty great.

    Yum yum yum!

I haven’t even heard of Sandcastle Organic! I must check this out…thanks for the suggestion!

Its so great to see vego stuff becoming more mainstream hey. My local IGA isn’t too bad with products but could be better. I tend to do a bulk shop at Manna and Angry Almond to get everything though…and probably end up spending too much whoops hehe.

So glad you liked it! I accept no responsibility for any piles of cash you may part with now you’ve discovered this place.

Also, how did I not know about this coconut juice?

  9. Annette @ Wellness WA

No worries Heather, we should try out some vego restaurants some time if you want 🙂

Conor, I’ll have my lawyer contact your lawyer about the amount you owe.

THE COCONUT JUICE IS THE BEST YES YES YES. So delish.

Also I’m so keen on the benefits of coconut juice lately, if you do a little search online you will find out about it, I’ll do a post soon on here with the places you can get coconut juice in Perth :)! x

I’d love that! 🙂 We should organise something soon!
(And I am very much looking forward to your post about coconut juice in Perth – very handy!)
